In this production of Samuel Beckett’s Happy Days, Walter D. Asmus works intensively the notes, changes, deletions and additions Beckett made to several previous productions in which he was Beckett’s collaborator. With renewed relevance in the current crisis of humankind with possible impending catastrophe, and with Walter D. Asmus’ personal view on the play – saturated with Beckett’s working knowledge – this will be a noteworthy production of this Beckett classic.
More informationWalter D. Asmus worked at the Schiller Theater in Berlin as an assistant director, dramaturgical assistant and director in the early 1970s. There he met Samuel Beckett in 1974, and in 1975 was his assistant on the legendary production of Waiting for Godot. He worked with Beckett on numerous theatre and television productions until the author’s death in 1989.
Asmus has directed all of Samuel Beckett’s plays internationally. His 1991 production of Waiting for Godot at Dublin’s Gate Theatre, with Barry McGovern, Johnny Murphy, Alan Stanford and Stephen Brennan, was revived several times with the same cast until 2008. The play toured worldwide in 1998 and in 2006. The production went on a major all-Ireland tour (32 counties), with the final performance on October 3, 2008, and was described by critics and academics alike as “definitive.”
