At  re:publica 2024, Studio Quantum, an artist-in-residence and events programme by Goethe-Institut, will explore the role of art in emerging quantum technologies, aligning with the festival’s theme “Who cares?”.

Irish visual artist and PhD researcher Nadia J. Armstrong who explores performance, 3D composition, AI, and expanded video, will present. She is currently in her first year of an interdisciplinary PhD at Ireland’s National College of Art and Design and CONNECT – the Science Foundation Ireland Research Centre for Future Networks and Communications. Nadia is examining technology’s underlying knowledge systems from an artist-ethnographic, ecosocial, cyborg feminist perspective.

The artistic duo kennedy+swan will join to share some insights into their Studio Quantum residency in Ireland, where their meetings with local project partners and their journey around the country inspired the creation of their newest piece – a VR experience revolving around AI, quantum, and healthcare. The artists will be joined on the panel by Adrian Schmidt – physicist and researcher at the Institute for Technology Assessment and Systems Analysis (ITAS) of the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), and the panel will be moderated by Professor Gesche Joost (Berlin University of the Arts / Goethe-Institut).

Nadia J. Armstrong is a visual artist and PhD researcher exploring performance, 3D composition, AI, and expanded video. Her focus is on the commodification of emotions, machine creation, and the interaction of bodies with global systems. She is currently in her first year of a fully funded interdisciplinary PhD at Ireland’s National College of Art and Design and CONNECT – the Science Foundation Ireland Research Centre for Future Networks and Communications, examining technology’s underlying knowledge systems from an artist-ethnographic, ecosocial, cyborg feminist perspective. Armstrong recently spoke at transmediale 2024 in Berlin and exhibited her work “RENDER ME TENDER” at Beta  festival in Dublin. The piece was  showcased at the RENDR festival in Belfast. She was part of the Beta x transmediale 2023 Residency Programme and Cybernate Residency programme. Supported by the Irish Arts Council and Accenture Ireland, Armstrong won the Digital Innovation in Art Award at the 2022 Business to Arts Awards. She is also a recipient of the 2021 Goethe-Institut AI Residencies Award.

STUDIO QUANTUM is an international artist-in-residence programme from the Goethe-Institut, exploring emerging quantum technologies through the lens of art. The residency programme and accompanying event series will examine important ethical and ecological questions around the impact of quantum technologies. The programme will connect artists and audiences with partners in technology, culture, science and education to foster an open dialogue on the topic of quantum technologies and the arts.  Through events in Dublin, Berlin, London, Beijing and San Francsico, STUDIO QUANTUM engages audiences in conversations around the future impact of quantum technologies.
