During the month of July 2024, artist Clare Scott will research, develop and create a temporary, site-specific work or ‘interference’ in SomoS space in Berlin. The first two weeks will see the evolution and assemblage of the work while the third week (15th-20th July) will see the display of the finished work. The piece will be created from recycled materials from the surrounding area and inspired by the locality, the space, staff and other artists. Input from the SomoS curator and others is welcomed along with donations of found materials. Aside from the artist’s usual concerns around querying space, the art object and plotting decision-making paths in new environments, the work aims to marry Irish creativity with its German location and maximise opportunities for connection between the artist, peers and audience.

There will be an artist talk 20th July at 7pm at SomoS

Clare Scott is an artist based in County Waterford. Clare was a painter for many years before returning to college to expand her practice. She received a First-Class Honours degree in Visual Arts from SETU (2017) and an MA in Art & Process from CIT Crawford in Cork (2019). She is currently studying at Ulster University for a Postgraduate Diploma/MA in Museum Practice and Management. At heart a painter, her practice in recent years has evolved to include site-specific, temporary installations. Materials used are often recycled from previous works and are predominantly wood and cardboard, but encompass other elements. This work, underpinned by the artist’s painterly sense and a background in theatre set design, is intended to reflect on the creative process, bringing it into the gallery to expose the decision-making process that also reflects the individuals necessarily uncertain progression through life. It results in accessible work that can be at turns beautiful, scary, and humorous while also probing the limits of gallery space and querying the value of the art object.

Her most recent installations include a solo show, Folie a Deux: Polyphonic Claverings on the Tragedy of Everyday Love at The Luan Gallery, Athlone in 2020; de/Construction Site, a collaborative experimental build with painter Julie Cusack at GOMA in Waterford in 2022; and rupture, a gallery ‘interference’ at Garter Lane Arts Centre, Waterford in 2023. She  built Surge, a site-specific work at the APS Mdina Cathedral Biennale in Malta in November 2023.
